Design-Making Process Of a Kitchen Knife

Designing of the knife: 

First, we draw a design for the blade using paper and a marker. Here, we can ensure the size of the blade based on the availability of material for making a knife. The design of the knife can be the original product of your mind or a copy of your favorite knife. This design will decide the length of the blade as well as the tang. 

Drawing of the blade:

Drawing the blade is another step in the series after design confirmation. Try to be strictly under the size and shape of the blade, as the drawing is used to cut the blade.

Selection of Carbon Steel:

Carbon steel is the most commonly used material in knife making. Take a piece of carbon steel. Stainless steel is not recommended for this purpose. The width and length of this carbon steel are in accordance with the size of the blade, including the tang.

Handle material:

The handle material should be waterproof. You can use any material for this purpose. Wood like oak, walnut, or rosewood is a perfect choice. Anything that can be joined together with rivets or other such things can be chosen for making a handle. 

Assembling of Tools: -

A hacksaw, drill, vice, angle grinder with hard and flap wheel, or any other tool could be necessary for making a knife.

Tracing the carbon steel

The time has come to trace the already-drawn design on the carbon steel plate. The design must be traced accurately with perfect measurements. First, every detail of the knife must be written on paper, and each part of the knife must be mentioned in the design.

Cutting the Steel:

Using a hacksaw, we will cut the carbon steel plate according to the design we have already traced on it. This plate will then be converted into a knife profile.

Grinding of Profile:

A knife profile is an extended form of knife on a metal plate. This plate is ground down with the help of an angling grinder. The width of the plate determines the blade of a knife.

Grinding of edge:

The edge of a knife is the central part while cutting the food. This part needs grinding to sharpen the edge of a blade. The knife edge is carefully made after grinding the profile. Care must be taken while making an angle on the blade for the edge. The edge should be ground in such a way that the sharpness of the edge is secured.

Drilling the steel: 

The next step is to drill holes in the steel tang part for rivets, which will hold each part of the handle material close. These holes must be under the size of our rivets.

Finishing of the knife:

The finishing of the knife varies depending on its type. There are a number of types of knives in respect of their usage and shape. Here are some knives for example Bowie Knives, Skinner Knives, and  Chef knives. Sandpaper is used to finish the product. This paper grinds down the tool to its desired grits.

Heat Treatment:

Heat treatment is extended to the knife for durability and toughness of knife sharpness. A heat-treated edge shows excellent durability and less wear and tear. This treatment is divided into heats. Every heat has a set temperature and air cooling time to start over. Last heat is cooled through a special oil to get the knife instantly cooled.

Handle Making:

Handle-making is the next step in the row. Wooden parts are glued together with rivets. The shape and color of the wood material matter a lot in making a handle.

Re-finishing of the Knife: 

Last but not least, the entire knife-making process involves finishing the product. The product receives finishing touches repeatedly until it reaches the perfect shape and requisite grits.
